Any officer who misuses the power and authority of law enforcement by engaging in sexual misconduct commits an extremely serious breach of professional ethics, a violation of civil rights under the color of law, and traumatic victimization of a colleague or member of the community whom law enforcement has sworn to protect. In more serious cases, they commit a violation of the criminal law they are charged with enforcing. Public and private agencies have taken a variety of steps to prevent such misconduct and respond appropriately when it does happen.
